A correctly designed and installed home plumbing system is practically trouble-free. Should problems occur, there are standard methods for dealing with them for the do-it-yourselfer. And there are good reasons as well – a neglected leak inside a wall, on the floor, or in the ceiling may cause serious damage.
Most plumbing systems provide numerous shutoff valves for controlling water flow in the supply system. Sinks and lavatories have individual shutoffs for hot and cold water; toilets have just one. The first thing to do in an emergency at a fixture is to close the shutoff valve.

When you get woke up at the early hour of 3AM, “There’s no water!” this is the time many often first consider a plumber at all. It seems many problems show there heads at of all times: when you are asleep! Of course a 24 hour plumber doesn’t come to mind immediately. Regardless you probably leap to your feet and go investigate a little further. And then you need to assess the situation, and as of now, you may be thinking you need a 24 hour plumber.

In my 17 years of plumbing in Edmonton, I have unclogged 100’s of toilets. Which since I don’t normally do drain cleaning this is quite a few. And not just your standard clogs either! In those years I have pulled out many things from peoples toilets. Toothbrushes, diapers, hand towels, pens/pencils, false teeth, woman’s toiletries, cleaning scrubbers, and of course your normal clogs.

Sometimes it seems like your shower or sinks are too hot, or not hot enough.
But raising the temperature valve on your water heater can be dangerous or a waste of energy. If there are children, elderly, or disabled persons in your household, for example, you might not want to set the thermostat above 120 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid contact with “hot” water.
The following chart may help you determine the right temperature for your water heater. According to Shriners Burn Institute:
- Water set to 125 degrees generally takes about 1.5 to 2 minutes to scald.
