March 18th, 2008 by admin

If you are redesigning or decorating a room, or house, care has to be taken where your piece of art is to be displayed. Even if you have bought a picture on impulse there are a few tips that will not only enhance the picture but its surroundings.

As a good rule of thumb it is good to hang a picture so that its centre is roughly at eye level. If you have a grouping of pictures then also the centre of the group should be at approximate eye level.

March 1st, 2008 by admin

Preparation- Fix walls first

Tape off your ceilings and baseboards with low tack masking tape. Blue tape works great. Use a cloth drop cloth instead of plastic. Drips will soak into the cloth and dry quicker so you don’t track paint thru the house. Fix holes or cracks on the walls first and remove dirt.

Using Paint Primers Properly

January 17th, 2008 by admin

Fall is the perfect time of year for painting, both indoors and outdoors. Temperatures are falling, the sun is not as harsh, and the humidity index is down. If painting indoors, windows can be opened to provide good ventilation. If painting outdoors, the climate is right to provide proper drying and adhesion of paints.

The proper surface preparation for any painting project is to remove any paint that is flaking and provide a reasonably clean surface. For a first coat, the use of a paint primer or specifically formulated undercoat paint is generally the best method to ensure that the final or decorative coat has proper adhesion to the surface that you are painting.

Improper or incomplete preparation is a recipe for disaster. Fail to prepare, and your project is doomed before it has even begun.

The steps I’ve listed below are general, all-purpose prep rules. They are standard steps for most jobs. Before and after preparation, reassess the space to see if something does not look fully prepared.

January 10th, 2008 by admin

One of the biggest obstacles in painting your home is knowing which types of paints to choose. Basically there are only two types of paint to use inside your home; water based latex paints and oil based paints. The difference is pretty simple actually. For the most part you’ll want to use an oil-based paint for the doors, the trim, and high traffic areas - and the water based latex for the walls.
