Home water filtration system installation can be an easy process of snapping a valve over your existing faucet or can be complex enough to require the services of a plumbing professional. There are a multitude of different purifier systems, and there are different ways to connect them to your existing plumbing.

The biggest, most expensive type of H2O purifiers are whole home units which attach to your water main and treat everything that flows into your house. This type of installation requires a certified plumber and usually takes between 1½ to 2½ hours hours to complete.

Typically you only need a plumber for the initial whole-house home water filtration system installation. Once it is in place, different maintenance procedures such as changing the filter usually can be done by the homeowner.

Units that do not attach to the water main are called “point of use” (POU) units. These attach either to sinks or to shower heads. Shower head home water filtration system installation usually is as simple as unscrewing the old shower head and replacing it with the purifying unit. This is a process that can be easily accomplished by the home owner, along with regular maintenance.

Sink models come in two types. An under-the-sink model rests in a cupboard under the sink, out of sight. This unit has its own separate spigot, a thin spout that is next to the main valve. Under-the-sink home water filtration system installation can be more complex and technical than attaching a shower unit because the homeowner must attach the unit to the sink H20 valve and the main faucet and also put in the new spigot for the purifying unit.

This process typically takes about twenty minutes and requires a screwdriver and a pair of pliers. Also, for most houses, the only place you can use an under-the-sink model is in the kitchen because the kitchen sink is configured in order to allow you to put in the new faucet. Bathroom sinks typically do not have this feature.

The other type of POU systems is the above sink model. The unit rests on the counter next to the sink and does not have its own separate spigot. Rather, it attaches to the main faucet. If you want the treated H20, you move a lever or push a button to access it. Above sink home water filtration system installation is an easy process. You simply remove the existing aerator on the main faucet and attach the valve from the purifier unit. It generally takes as long to set up as it does a shower head unit.

Home water filtration system installation depends entirely on the type of unit you purchase. If you want to save money or do not have much mechanical dexterity, an above sink POU might be your best option. However, bear in mind that whatever type of unit you chose, you only have to set it up; after that, installation is no longer an issue.
