The Mother-in-law Youll Love In Your Home - Easy Care Sansevieria Plant

January 19th, 2008 by admin

The Sansevieria plant, more commonly known as
the Snake Plant or Mother-In-Laws Tongue, are very easy to grow
and maintain. There are about 60 different species of this plant
that originates in Africa. They are very beautiful and look
great in indoor gardens.

Sansevieria are so easy to maintain in fact, that in the winter,
they can go two months without needed to be watered. They also
do fine without receiving much sunlight. They are great indoors
for this reason.

The leaves are very unique and add to their beauty. The patterns
on the leaves change for each new growth. It is common that the
leaves are dark green. Other variations include leaves with
speckles, yellow stripes around the edges, or a multitude of
other possibilities. No matter what the pattern is, the fact
that the tips of the leaves are sharp remains the same. You need
to be careful when watering the plant and trimming the leaves.
You should not trim the tips.

You should be very careful to give the plant the proper amount of
water. Error in either direction could be very bad. If you over
water, the leaves will fall off and produce root rot. If you
underwater, however, the leaves will look wrinkled and the roots
can be damaged. Don’t skate the long leaves for support if they
fall over. If that happens, simply trim the leaves off and wait
for new ones to grow.

Since the Sansevieria does not need much water, it is good to let
the soil dry out between waterings. This makes house plant care easy! You
can use a tongue depressor or a hygrometer to test the moisture
of the soil.

The Sansevieria also thrives in heat, since they are native to
tropical areas. They will grow very well in a warm room with
plenty of sunlight. If you choose a pot that is too small, the
strong roots can actually break the pot because they can grow
more quickly that expected. If you choose a pot that is too big,
it may grow faster than you’d like it to. It is best to choose
something in the middle.

Sansevieria does well in soil that has low nitrogen levels. They
don’t need much fertilizer. In fact, too much of it can be bad
for the plant. They are similar to Cacti in this respect. You
should care for it like you would a cactus to have the healthiest
plant possible.

Some species will have white or green flowers bloom along the
stalks. Some other species have no flowers, but have fibrous
leaves that was used for bow strings in the past.

Overall, Sansevieria is a unique and interesting plant that looks
great and is easy to care for.
